Ms. Wilma Murphy Obituary

We are saddened to announce the passing of Ms. Wilma Murphy of Godwin, passed away on Thursday, December 26, 2024.

Wilma Diane, daughter of the late EW and Isabell Murphy, was born on July 6, 1954,

Wilma was the epitome of resilience and dedication, balancing her roles as a single mother, minister, and songstress with remarkable grace. Her academic excellence was evident early on, earning awards and milestones such as obtaining her school bus license at a young age. She graduated from Cape Fear High School and Hardbarger Business School, paving the way for a distinguished 27-year career with BB&T (now Truist). As one of the few African American women in her area to achieve such longevity and respect, she served as an inspiration to many.

Wilma’s life was deeply rooted in her faith. Accepting Christ at an early age, she embraced her spiritual calling and was ordained as an Elder in the Cape Fear Conference A under WH Currie. Her musical talents, whether through her stirring gospel singing or her gifted piano and keyboard playing, brought joy and inspiration to congregations at Wesley Chapel, Spring Hill, and The Evangelical House of God. Wilma also preached her initial trial sermon at The Evangelical House of God, sharing her heartfelt devotion to Christ with others.

Her boundless compassion extended beyond the church. As a devoted daughter, she provided unwavering care for her parents during their illnesses, embodying selflessness and love. In her community, Wilma made a difference by organizing back-to-school parties, creating opportunities for others, and offering a listening ear or comforting presence, even during her own illness. Her ability to remember and care for others, regardless of her circumstances, was a testament to her kind and giving spirit.

Preceded in death by her beloved brother Willie Daniel, Wilma leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories. She is survived by her devoted daughter, Denise Underwood, of Fayetteville, North Carolina; her siblings Lenora McKoy of Garner, North Carolina; Pearl Locker of Peoria, Illinois; Gale Adkins of Raleigh, North Carolina; Delphine Morgan of Petersburg, Virginia; and William Chavis (Queen Esther) of Godwin, North Carolina. She also leaves behind her treasured granddaughters, Na'Deja and Ja'Deya Underwood of Fayetteville, North Carolina, along with a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends who were blessed to know her.

Wilma Diane Murphy’s life was a beautiful symphony of faith, music, and compassion. Her unwavering love, resilience, and spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those she touched. Though deeply missed, her legacy lives on in the lives she enriched and the love she shared so freely.
