Sergeant Major (Retired) Sylvester "Mack" McKethan, 90, of 5702 Yellowstone Court, Fayetteville, passed away January 20, 2021. He was the son of the late Sylvester and Catherine McKethan of Linden. He received his formal education in the schools of Cumberland County. Afterwards, he enlisted in the United States Army in 1951 and retired with 30 years. He was also a devout Christian. His devotion to Davis Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church solidified him as a strong rock in the foundation of that religious congregation and community.
SGM McKethan leaves to mourn: his son - Sherrill McKethan; granddaughter - Rhonda Gaffney; two sisters - Josephine McNeill of Fayetteville and Mattie Currie of Spring Lake; a devoted friend and companion - Estherine Moore of Fayetteville; several nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
The public viewing will be at the Dafford Funeral Home Chapel, Dunn, Sunday, January 24, 2021 from 12 Noon - 2:50 pm with no more than 10 individuals inside at one time. Masks are required to enter and practicing social distancing.
The funeral service will be conducted Sunday, January 24, 2021 at 3:00 pm at the Dafford Funeral Home Chapel, Dunn, with no more than 50 people present. Masks are required to enter and practicing social distancing.
Burial, with military honors, will be held on Thursday, January 28, 2021 at 10:00 am at the Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery, Ft. Bragg. No more than 25 people are allowed inside the committal building. Masks are required to enter and practicing social distancing.
